China has completed all the track laying work of the Lhasa–Shigatse Railway, and it is expected that it will be put into operation in September 2014.
About the Lhasa–Shigatse Railway
The Lhasa–Shigatse Railway project is an extension of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, and its construction began in September 2010.
The 253-kilometer Lhasa–Shigatse Railway will run through 13 stations, including five passenger stations.
With a designed speed of 120 kilometers per hour, the traveling time between Lhasa and Shigatse will be only two hours, which will offer great convenience for tourists traveling between Lhasa and Shigaste.
Travel to Lhasa
Tibet transport has been greatly improved since the world famous Qinghai–Tibet Railway was put into operation on July 1, 2006. There are many direct trains from Lhasa to cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Chengdu. The more convenient ones are in high demand from tourists. We recommend flying to Lhasa from the less-convenient-by-rail cities, and if you can't get a train.
