Animal Paradise in Zhangjiajie Scenic Area Animal Paradise in Zhangjiajie Scenic Area
The subtropical forest covered 97.7 percent of the area in Zhangjiajie Scenic Area. A lot of rare animal lived here. There are about 150 species of terrestrial amniotes and 60 species of birds, such as; South Chinese Tiger, Jinqian Leopard, Cloud Leopard, Yellow Snipe, mole, macaque, bushbuck, pangolin, black bear, otter, musk deer, Red Pheasant, egret and white crane. Three species are state level one protection list in China. 25 species are listed the second rank of protecting animal. Among them, 18 species was listed International Trade Treaty for Rare Animal and Plant and 54 species was protected by Hunan Province.

Macaque
Macaque was listed the second rank of protecting animal. According to fur color, macaque in Wulingyuan is classified blue macaque, yellow macaque and golden macaque. There are dozens groups. The biggest group has hundred and the smallest has dozens.

Jinqian leopard
Jinqian Leopard lived in dense wood in Emperor Mountain, Yangjiajie and Zhangjiajie. With weight of 50 kilograms, the leopard is smaller than South Chinese Tiger. The tail of leopard is one meter long. With golden yellow fur covered, the leopard is fast and agile. It was listed the first rank of protecting animal. 

Giant salamander
Giant Salamander also named Baby Fish is the biggest amphibian in the world. Giant salamander lived in streams and ponds was listed the second rank of protecting animal. Its four legs like baby's arms and its sound like cry of baby. So, it named Baby Fish. It lives on small fish, crab, worm and frog. Sometimes, it climb tree and catch birds and snakes. The shape of giant salamander is tabular. With breath by lung and skin, its color changed with condition. It lives tow or three years without food.

Pangolin
Pangolin, listed the second rank of protecting animal, is famous for digging hole in mountains. With hard carapace, long tongue, sharp claw, small legs and small eyes, it is half meter long. It lives on ants. So, reduce harm of ants. It reputed woods guarder.

CARRYING WATER BIRD OR RED PHEASANT
It belongs to the first rank of protecting animal. With red flower colorful feather, it is a beautiful bird. It is interesting that it has a special organ for preserving water. The bird lives on mountaintop. It flies down stream and drinks one-kilogram water in 5 days. Most water preserved in its special organ. So, local people named it as Carrying Water Bird. 

Black Bear
Black bear lives in dense forest in Emperor Mountain, Black Fir Ridge, Baofeng Mountain and Yangjiajie. One bear is 1.8 meters high and 200 kilograms weigh. They likes live in dense forest and cave. They live on fruit, grass and new bud. They especially like honey. They do not attack human being. They, however, become irascible during sexual intercourse and production.

Rock frog
Rock Frog also named Rock Cock. The frog like live in the cave. They catch food in the night.
