University Students Call for Better Protection of Birds

On April 1, the launch ceremony of the 32nd Bird-loving Week of Changsha City was held at Hunan International Economic University (HNIEU).

The event was co-hosted by the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Forestry and the Changsha Wildlife Conversation Association (CWCA), whose first branch on university campus was also established at HNIEU.

Themed with "Beautiful Changsha and Let the Birds Fly Free", the Bird-loving Week this year was celebrated by a total of 438 university students who volunteer to protect birds.

Each volunteer, holding a picture of one bird, sat on the football pitch in the shape of the sun. When hearing the host's instruction, a student representing the human race pushed the first volunteer down on the second volunteer. Then the rest volunteers fell down in linear sequence like dominos in less than two minutes, including the last student representing the human being.

Chief of the CWCA Zhou Canying, designer of the domino-effect activity, stated that the volunteers represent 438 species of birds observed in Hunan, and the first and last students represent the mankind respectively. She added that the whole activity demonstrates the chain effect of species extinction.
