Recently, the State Council announced that the Shunhuang Mountain in Dong'an County (in southwest Hunan) and Baiyun Mountain in Baojing County (in west Hunan) were approved as the national natural reserves. As forest ecosystem natural reserves, they are of great value to protect the abundant wildlife resource.
Up to now, Hunan has established 19 national natural reserves, sharing the second place with Sichuan and Inner Mongolia in terms of number.
