Wang Mingxu, Party secretary of Hunan Forest Botanical Garden announced on March 24 that a 100-mu (about 6.7- hectare) cherry blossom forest has been planned behind the Cherry Blossom Lake, making the garden world's third largest cherry blossom spot only next to those in Washington and Tokyo.
According to Mr. Wang, the garden has a largest collection of nearly 70 early and late cherry blossom varieties across the country. More than 3 million yuan will be invested on the purchase of 50-plus new cherry blossom varieties from Beijing. Early, mid-season and late cherry trees will be rationally spaced to extend the viewing period to 40 days.
In addition, hundreds of cherry trees will be grown on a mountain with an area of 100 mu( about 6.7 hectares) near the Monument to Hunan Heroes. The flowers in the cherry forest and cherry mountain will bloom at different times so that visitors can enjoy charm of these flowers for a longer time.
