Summary
Yao Mountain is the highest mountain in Guilin. It has become a popular tourist destination at home and abroad. Every March, the hillsides flame with colorful azaleas.
Overview
Yao Mountain is located in the eastern suburbs of Guilin, about 10 km (6.2 miles) from the city center. It is famous for both natural beauty and ancient tombs. Its main peak reaches 909 meters. At the hillside, about 450 meters high, built Yao Temple during the Qin Dynasty (221BC–206BC), which gave the mountain the name. The whole hill in every March turns into a sea of colorful azaleas.
In front of the Yao Temple is "heaven-sent field" (an area ensures stable yields despite drought or excessive rain). At an altitude of 600 ~ 700 meters, we see Bailu Temple, residence of a famous monk in the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Around 200 meters above sea level built Zhusheng Temple in the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), also known as Mau Ping Temple. When standing at the peak, visitors can see a huge natural reclining Buddha.
The Ropeway
Travelers can take the ropeway car to reach the top of the hill. The ropeway has a length of 1.4 km (0.9 miles), and one-way operation only costs 20 minutes. It is the first ropeway of Guangxi tourism. In 1996, the slide way was completed, with the second length nationwide and the first in Southwest China. Its top speed reaches 80 km / hour and the speed limit 35 km/hour. Most of the slide way is constructed through dense forests or places difficult to set foot in. Visitors can have a look at the special scenery there.
Tombs of Prince Jingjiang
At the foot of Yao Mountain preserves the most complete Military Governors Tombs of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), Tombs of Prince Jingjiang
Guilin Tea Science and Research Institute
Guilin Tea Science and Research Institute located near Yao Mountain is also worth visiting. Here you will get to know different types of tea, the production process, and enjoy a tea ceremony while sipping a warm cup of tea.
